Opposing Views

April 13, 2008

Friends are just friends. Friends are friends with benefits. Friends are people who want a relationship.

I had a conversation with a friend a few weeks ago where the topic of guys and girls as platonic friends came up. My theory? Guys and girls can have a strictly platonic friendship. My friend’s view was the opposite. That in rare cases, yes it is possible, but for the most part there will always be some kind of “tension”.

The difference in opinions intrigued me. Was my point of view completely unmerited, or was it my friend’s? I started an informal poll. And by informal I mean, posing this question to various friends if the opportunity arose.

You know what I discovered? That the answers were evenly split. So much for hoping to win that argument with statistics!

So dear Internet, what’s your view on the subject?

Conversations

April 9, 2008

The following conversation just took place between myself and the new sales-trainee on my team:

Him: So you leave for the Dominican soon, eh?
Me: Friday.
Him: This Friday?
Me: No. Next Friday. I’m going away with the girls this weekend.
Him: Your poor old liver!
Me: What are you talking about?
Him: Well, you’ll be drunk for 3 days this weekend. And you’ll be drunk for the 7 days your away in the Dominican.
Me: This weekend I won’t be drinking until Saturday night. We won’t arrive until 10 pm on Friday night….

(Notice I don’t dispute the theory I’ll be drinking for 7 days straight in the Dominican? Back to the conversation….)

Him: You won’t drink in the car?
Me: NO! Are you crazy?
Him: You guys will have that much to talk about?
Me: Have you ever been in a car with a couple of girls at once?
Him: (says nothing but raises eyebrow at me)
Me: Um, if you were I DO NOT want to know what you were doing.
Him: (still says nothing just smirks)
Me: (laughing) We always have stuff to talk about. And the conversation generally only stops when people fall asleep.

It’s in the stars

April 9, 2008

My Horoscope reads:

You may be grasping for too much, so try to make sure that you’re being realistic. A little greed isn’t so bad, but too much can result in some seriously awkward situations after time passes.

Specifically for singles:

Flexibility is key in your romantic dealings for the next few days. If you and your date can’t decide where to eat dinner or which movie to go to, let the other person choose. By showing that you are open minded about small things, it reflects that you can be open-minded about the big things, too.

Two big questions….What romantic dealings? What date?

Happy Birthday

April 8, 2008

Happy Birthday Dad. You’re 79 years old today.

This day was quite difficult for me to handle last year. I was talking to my dear friend Erin, and explained to her how it would have been your birthday. She corrected me in saying it is your birthday. Present tense, not past.

And although it made me cry, her statement reminded me of something very important. You truly are always with us.

When I look in the mirror and curse my eyebrows, you’re there. When Emma’s ears go red in the sun, you’re there. When the kids come up with a “darndest thing” comment, you’re there. When we’re all together and there’s a lull in the conversation, it’s just your turn to say something.

You’re there watching over us as we sleep. You’re the little voice in the back of our heads telling us we did a great job on something. You’re the motivation to do better, and the reason we have pride in ourselves.

To put it simply Dad, you’re the reason for us.

And although you may no longer be with us physically, we know we have the best angel possible. Our Dad who knew all, and saw all, although he may have denied it, truly does see and know all now.

So, Happy Birthday Dad. I love you.

Binary Anyone?

April 7, 2008

If I were to tell you I’m fluent in several languages, would you believe me? Shocking, no? Well, it’s true; sort of. My friend’s husband tells us that my girlfriends and I speak in Binary. A friend of mine tells me that since I am a girl I naturally speak Martian. I speak English everyday, and when the need arises, I will attempt to speak French.

So my theory is that makes me fluent in several languages. Yes, I do realize that this is akin to a kid saying they are fluent in Pig Latin. But it’s a Monday. I haven’t posted in forever, and this was the only thing I could think of right now.

I wanted to write a post back in February to mark the one year anniversary of my dad’s passing, but I just couldn’t bring myself to finish it. I had too many thoughts to share, and my emotions were making it difficult to organize them properly.

Last Friday would have been my parents’ 27th wedding anniversary. I spent the day trying to ignore the fact which I’m positive was easier for me than my mom. Tomorrow will be my dad’s 79th birthday, a day none of us are looking forward to.

It always seems to be something, doesn’t it?
